Bangarang 1.0 “The Basics” released

Filed under: Uncategorized — jamboarder @ 11:30 pm

I’m happy to announce the release of Bangarang 1.0 “The Basics”.  To learn more about Bangarang see the homepage.

See the release notes for more information on changes since the Release Candidate.

This latest release can be downloaded from opendesktop.org – it will be updated with packages as they become available.  Please report any issues you encounter on the issue tracker.  If you would like to package Bangarang for your distribution you can download the source tarball for the latest release from here.  You can also keep up with the latest development at the gitorious project development home.

Many thanks to those who were able to to test Bangarang and report issues.  The following folks contributed code to Bangarang in one form or another:

  • Andreas Marschke
  • Buschmann
  • Janus Lewandowski
  • Kristof Bal
  • Ryan Kavanagh
  • Sebastian Jambor
  • Shuizhuyuanluo

Thanks so much for offering your time and energy.

I’ve done my best to minimize the bugs for this release. However, please feel free to report any bugs you find. In many, perhaps most, cases I may not be aware of an issue until someone reports it.

A quick note: As the name implies, this release focused on a basic feature set.  There is inevitably a diversity of views regarding what constitutes “basic”, but I’m content to acknowledge that and move on. Perhaps, during the next feature cycle or two, Bangarang will satisfy a greater percentage of this diversity of views.

That said, permit me to be a little selfish by acknowledging that I’m doing this for fun – not to create an uber-media player that will (probably fail to) satisfy everyone.

So, after a couple  weeks break, it’ll be on to a new feature cycle!  I already have some ideas for what new features to work on, but if you have more ideas feel free to pipe up.  I won’t be able to commit to adding any and everything thrown my way, but who knows, something might pop up that wasn’t on my radar.  I’ll put up a target feature list on the gitorious wiki when I’ve narrowed them down to something manageable.  (There will be periodic 1.0.x releases containing bug fixes and translation updates till the next feature release.)

Till then, I hope you like Bangarang 1.0!

Peace and much respect.

  2. Great news !

Is there any plan to improve the MKV file support in the future release of Bangarang, especially, the embedded files (movie cover for instance) and the different tag supported by this container ? Or maybe this lack for MKV is due to strigi/nepomuk tag recognition ?

  5. You should correct the spelling of the name of the application. BTW: Cool software, like and use it!

    • Funny, its the 1.0 release of the application and I mispell the name. When it’s too late I need to go to bed instead of writing a blog post!

      • Hmm… mayby that should be a rule for every software developer “before big release, sleep over night before announcing it” 😀

It is very great to see that Bangarang was released before KDE SC 4.4!

  18. I do not leave a great deal of comments, but after browsing some of the responses
on Bangarang 1.0 The Basics released | Bangarang – a media player.
I actually do have a couple of questions for you if you tend not to mind.
Is it simply me or does it seem like a few of these responses appear as if they are coming from brain
dead individuals? 😛 And, if you are writing on additional sites, I’d like to follow you. Could you list of all of all your social networking pages like your linkedin profile, Facebook page or twitter feed?
